Design is something that Erskine talks about all the time. As the new girl at Erskine, and as a researcher in design, I think it’s interesting to think about what exactly we mean when we talk about design, and what examples are out there of our kind of design.
Design is a new discipline. It has only existed as a profession that we would recognise today since the early 20th century. It is partly because of this ‘newness’ and partly because it is a highly creative and constantly evolving area that design struggles to define itself. A broad range of professionals identify themselves as designers, and rightly so. What I would like to discuss is what design means for us, Erskine, in the context of regeneration, social responsibility and all of our core values. I’m looking for interesting designers and projects that can inform our understanding of how design can be used to bring about the changes we want to see in the world.
