Design is something that Erskine talks about all the time. As the new girl at Erskine, and as a researcher in design, I think it’s interesting to think about what exactly we mean when we talk about design, and what examples are out there of our kind of design.
Design is a new discipline. It has only existed as a profession that we would recognise today since the early 20th century. It is partly because of this ‘newness’ and partly because it is a highly creative and constantly evolving area that design struggles to define itself. A broad range of professionals identify themselves as designers, and rightly so. What I would like to discuss is what design means for us, Erskine, in the context of regeneration, social responsibility and all of our core values. I’m looking for interesting designers and projects that can inform our understanding of how design can be used to bring about the changes we want to see in the world. Prizes will be awarded if you can tell me which book cover the image is from…

Katie, I’d be very interested to have a chat with you about design in general, and how we seek to explain and use visual and functional design in our web-based work.
In the web industry it is very easy to forget how clients and end users perceive what we do and what we mean when we talk about design.

yeah colly, we should definately chat. My main area of interest is participatory design (hence my first two blogs… predictably on design and participation)… and web design is streets ahead in that area. there’s some REALLY interesting stuff happening and it could be very exciting to see what Erskine Design can get up to in that area....maybe we can work together on something?
of course you’ve got the old skool stuff like open source (which is of course spreading it’s influence into other areas, like open source business http://www.economist.com/business/displaystory.cfm?story_id=5624944
and the open source car http://www.theoscarproject.org/)
but more inventive forms of collaborative production via the web are being developed all the time. There’s some interesting stuff coming from commentators on participation and collaboration who are themselves practicing what they preach by putting their own work on participation into the public arena, like Charles Leadbeater with his we think project http://www.wethinkthebook.net/home.aspx who’s trying out collaboratively producing a book.
I think there’s real potential in some of Erskine’s regeneration work to really push the boat out on creative collaborative projects… and that’s what I’m here for… so let’s see what we can do…
