East Riding of Yorkshire Council: Play and free-time strategy

In 2007, Erskine were asked to assist the council with the development of the play and free time strategy along with developing the bid to the Big Lottery Fund.

Children with Parachute

Whilst there was already some good existing consultation about play and free time in East Riding, Erskine consulted further into the broader issues and needs for play with a wide range of audiences.

Children, parents, young people, partners as well as Play Partnership members were all asked what play / free-time opportunities currently existed, what was needed and what were the barriers to making change happen. Disabled children and young people, their parents, parish councils and voluntary and community groups were also included in the consultation.

In addition Erskine produced an audit and mapping of existing play provision. The audit measured provision down to a ward level and provided the Partnership with a truly comprehensive measurement of provision.

An in-depth, jargon free report has been drawn up by Erskine, highlighting the main points of the consultation to undertake to develop a cohesive and informed play strategy, thus increasing the play opportunities for children and young people in East Riding.

The Play and Free-time Strategy and bid were submitted to the Big Lottery in September 2007 and the council was awarded £563,333 to deliver the projects…

Another success.

This is just a quick note to state how much we have enjoyed working with you over the last six months. Despite tight time pressures your staff have always remained confident and professional keeping the glass half full!

Your thoroughness in recognising and describing the challenges in this project enabled us to progress issues clearly and confidently so that as a team we were able to work closely with you when it was most needed.

It wasn’t only your professionalism that impressed us but also the friendly and informative manner in which you operated. All comments and suggestions were acted on in good faith, never received with dourness but only optimism and enthusiasm which we found refreshing and contagious. It has been a pleasure…
