This article is about just how important getting all (or the majority) of the elected members (councillors in jargon-free speak) involved in the play strategy process.

Their interest, passion and understanding are absolutely vital to the play strategy’s success, no matter how inclusive or supportive your play partnership. They will be able to make the whole process sustainable by mainstreaming funding in future years if you are able to convince them of the value of play to their agenda.
In one of our play strategies, we were able to achieve funding from the council to employ a senior play coordinator over three years in addition to money made available by the Big Lottery, even though initially we were told there additional money was unlikely to be forthcoming. This was only achieved by the hard work of our client and us taking time to help the lead member understand why play could deliver his agenda, as well as those of his colleagues, turning him from an interested party into the strongest advocate for play in the district.
If you are just starting the strategy make sure you send out a letter or email to all members about why the play is important, raise the profile of play thorough a lead member. If you don’t have a champion at cabinet level who is completely sold on play, get one...quick. Even if you already have a strategy, the ongoing support of members for play is easy to take for granted, so keep them in the loop… Those local elections are coming up and play is an easy win for them....
If anybody else has experience of getting members to back play, I’d love to hear how you did it.
PS. I have been darting round the country with the numerous play strategies that we are helping councils and their communities to create, so I apologise for not updating my blog more often…
